Why We Left the Marketplace: The Cost of Corporate Algorithms on Independent Art
When I launched my watercolor commission studio one month ago, I had a simple, honest business plan: work hard, paint beautiful pieces, look after my customers, and follow the rules.
The response was staggering. In less than 30 days, the studio was bursting with life. Eleven beautiful commissions came in—from custom dog and cat portraits to large-scale watercolor paintings of iconic British wedding venues like Beamish Hall Country House Hotel.

The orders were hand-painted, packaged, and dispatched using tracked Royal Mail shipping. The feedback followed quickly: a flawless 5.0-star average review rating, a 100% on-time dispatch rate, a 100% message response rate, and zero customer cases.
By every metric on the board, the business was a massive success. But then, we hit the corporate wall.
The Day the Algorithm Froze Our Capital
Making sales and getting paid turned out to be two completely different things. Despite a perfect tracking record and 5-star reviews, a corporate automated algorithm flagged our sudden success as a "risk."
Suddenly, over £££££ in hard-earned profits was locked away in a "non-disbursable" hold. When I contacted support, I spent days trapped in loops with automated bots and frontline agents reading copy-pasted scripts. No one could provide a straight answer. While our funds were locked up, the corporate platform continued to subtract listing fees and marketing costs in real-time.

For an independent artisan, cash flow is oxygen. Without access to our own working capital, we couldn't buy fresh cold-pressed watercolor paper, professional pigments, mounts, or fuel for postage.
The algorithm didn't care that a real, legitimate business was being starved. To protect our assets, we had to make a tough call: we locked the old shop doors, put it into holiday mode, and stopped letting a corporate giant control our livelihood.
Turning Frustration Into Independence
A corporate platform can lock down a user account, but it can never touch or take away the artistic skill it takes to create a piece of art. They didn't build this business—our clients and our artwork did.
Instead of fighting a broken automated system, we chose to channel that energy into building something permanent.

We are incredibly proud to announce that our custom watercolor commission studio has officially moved to our own independent domain: artonawall.co.uk.
What Moving Independent Means for Our Clients
Stepping away from the corporate marketplace giants means we can finally run our studio on our own terms:
- Direct, Secure Checkout: Our website uses verified independent payment processing, meaning your funds clear safely and directly to our local studio within 48 hours, keeping our supply chain perfectly fluid.
- 100% Personal Service: No more automated bots or corporate intermediaries. When you order a bespoke wedding venue portrait or a pet keepsake, you deal directly with the artist.
- The Same Flawless Quality: Our 5.0-star standard hasn't changed. Every piece is still meticulously hand-painted with professional inks and watercolors.
What's Next for Art on a Wall?
While we wait out the final automated countdown for our remaining marketplace funds to clear on 1 July, we are busy setting up the physical easel.

This summer, we are taking our original paintings out into the real world. We will be showcasing our architectural and venue portfolios live at local UK wedding fairs, where couples can see the rich texture of the paper and the intricate linework up close.
Thank you to our first 11 incredible clients who made our first month so unforgettable. You proved that people value original British hand-painted art. We invite you to follow our journey, view our updated portfolios, and book your next custom commission directly at our new home: www.artonawall.co.uk.
